Elder Expeditions Trip to Romania

In mid January,  2011, a group of Elder Expeditioners  arrived in the Transylvania region of Romania, ready to start  a nine day adventure of:

•  exploring
•  self discovery
•  diving  into new activities
•  facing new challenges
•  re-acquainting with old activities
•  making new friends

Over the course of the next nine days, the Elder Expeditioners, along with their  local Transylvanian hosts,  a trio  of young and dynamic  ethnic Hungarians,  set out to savor  a winter experience deep in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains.  Their experiences, the stuff of memories , included:

•  Challenging hikes to a variety of caves, i.e. tree trunk caves, the multi-level Sugo cave, nestled in the mountains where a local guide gave a well informed presentation  of the cave’s geologic history, and the Borta Lui Ionele cave which the group successfully reached only after carefully negotiating an icy ascent
•  A rugged uphill trek to an ancient fortress originally built to defend the local inhabitants from invading Tartars
•  Igloo building
•  Archery (in which some of the Elder Expeditioners  excelled although a  first time experience for all)
•  Horseback riding
•  Horse drawn  carts

During the course of their Romanian adventure, the group experienced rustic lodging with a delightful  and accommodating staff as well as a the more traditional four star hotel  lodging,   The meals, tasty and plentiful, consisted of local cuisine, generally Hungarian (as distinguished from Romanian) in style and genre.

Upcoming Print Media Ads!

Elder Expeditions is proud to announce a new round of print media advertisements that will run regionally in Toronto Canada and Los Angeles California.

Elder Expeditions, a multi-sport adventure travel company for active folks,  fifty and older, was created by a lifetime adventure traveler and adherent to the philosophy that the fiftieth birthday marks the beginning of a new and dynamic life benchmark:  one best defined as “OUR TIME.”.
It’s OUR TIME…..
•    to reach for new experiences and adventures,
•    to explore fascinating  destinations with small groups of like minded contemporaries,
•    to seek new challenges
•    to re-acquaint with our inner selves,
•    to interact with different cultures.
Whether trekking to the top of legendary Mt. Kilimanjaro, or drifting over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon, or kayaking through the serenity of England’s Lake District, or shooting the rapids in Nepal’s Trishuli River, or exploring Paleolithic caves in the south of France or ice caves in Romania or the awesome stalactites in the caves of Tunisia, or dog sledding in the Jura Mountains of eastern France, or learning to play the bodhran in Ireland, or spending a day with the Bushmen of East Africa or the Berbers of North Africa, the possibilities are ever increasing as ELDER EXPEDITIONS constantly adds to its roster of destinations and available opportunities.
OUR TIME  is now !

Alaska

Along with fellow Elder Expeditions team member, Linda, and a friend from England, we boarded a ferry in Bellingham, Washington last Friday to start a trek  through Alaska in search of new and exciting Elder Expeditions destinations.

A chance encounter with a fellow ferry passenger, an emergency room doctor from British Columbia, resulted in some “leads” for what sounded like an exciting and challenging kayak / canoe adventure around the B.C. islands.  As we listened to her description of the area (including the warning to take care to securely stow all food out of  bear and wolf reach, Linda and I looked at each other and decided,   then and there that this would be an upcoming Elder Expeditions destination.

Our Newest Destination

We at ELDER EXPEDITIONS are excited to announce the addition of our newest destination:  Nepal, the home of Mount Everest.

While we will not be attempting the rigors of a climb to the peak of the legendary mountain, we will have the opportunity to view the roof of the world from the comfort of a special Himalayan flight that will kick off our ten day Nepali adventure.

This Elder Expeditions trip into the heart of the Himalayas offers thrilling opportunities for hikes through some of the world’s most majestic landscapes, some adrenalin pumping whitewater rafting, and even a trek through the jungle on the back of an elephant.

We invite you to take a close look at our Nepal page and the exciting experiences offered.

Welcome to Elder Expeditions’ Revitalized Website

An article in the January 7, 2010 edition of the New York Times, described Ilse Telesmanich, a Florida woman, who at the age of ninety is planning to return to South Africa to complete a hike that she was forced to abort in August, 2009, after spraining her ankle.  The same article describes Tom Lackey, who at age 89 took up a new sport:  wing walking on a biplane.  According to the article, this bold octogenarian “… strapped his feet to the top of a single-engine biplane, like the daredevils of aviation’s early days, and flew across the English Channel at 160 miles per hour — with nothing between him and the wild blue yonder but goggles and layers of clothing to fight the wind-chill.”

While avoiding extreme sports, it is the fortitude and character of folks like Ilse Telesmanich  and Tom Lackey that represents the spirit that Elder Expeditions embraces:

OUR TIME, a time to self-indulge, a time to re-invent and re-create, a time to explore…..

It is Elder Expeditions’ fundamental belief that the fiftieth birthday is the gateway to a new horizon, where we can experiment with new and different activities, or perhaps return to those activities set aside for the exigencies of raising families and career advancement.  With those demands and constraints behind us we can focus on rejuvenating our own physical and mental vitality.

Each Elder Expeditions trip offers a minimum of three sports which provide a comfortable mix of challenging and exhilarating activity and stimulating tranquility.  Cultural components are added to each Elder Expeditions tour to complement the trip’s physical features with a dose of mental musing and inspiration.

Elder Expeditions:  OUR TIME, a time to self-indulge, a time to re-invent and re-create, a time to explore…..
